# Programmatic SEO for Startups: When a Template Is Worth Publishing

Programmatic SEO is many pages from one template and a dataset. It works when every URL is genuinely different. Here is the test before you generate them.

Published: November 2, 2026 · 1,200 words · 6 minute read

Programmatic SEO (pSEO) means publishing many pages from one template filled with structured data. A job board's city pages, a directory's product pages, and a tool's “size for each network” pages are the pattern. The template is not the strategy. The dataset is.

## When it works

- Each row in the dataset is something a person searches on its own.
- The page shows facts that are not on the other rows: a price, a limit, a location, a product description written for that record.
- You can link between related rows without a maze of duplicates.
- The URL is stable. You are not generating a page for every keyword variant of the same intent.

FoundrList's product pages are this shape: one record per product, with its own name, description and URL. A blog post that only swaps “for designers” and “for marketers” onto the same five paragraphs is not.

## When it gets you filtered

Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse as producing many pages, usually with automation, mainly to manipulate rankings, without adding much value. Doorway pages that exist to rank for a query and then bounce the reader elsewhere sit in the same family. A location or keyword spun across an empty template is the usual failure.

> If you would be embarrassed to show a stranger one of the generated URLs on its own, do not ship the set.

## A small-team version

1. Export the entities you already have: products, categories, comparisons, tools.
2. Write the template around what changes per entity. Delete any sentence that is identical on every page.
3. Pick queries from keyword research where the entity is the search, not a modifier you invented.
4. Add one editorial hub that explains the set and links to the best entries. Hubs are where [AEO](https://www.foundrlist.com/blog/what-is-answer-engine-optimization) still matters.
5. Watch Search Console. Prune pages with impressions and no clicks, or no impressions after they have been indexed for a while.

Ship the hub first. This library is a hub: each guide targets a query with its own answer, then points at the product pages and at [launching on FoundrList](https://www.foundrlist.com/agent). Generating a hundred “submit your startup to {directory}” pages with the same advice would be the version to avoid.

## What programmatic SEO looks like when it is real

The searches around programmatic seo and pseo are full of templates that promise thousands of pages. The pages that hold up are the ones where the dataset already existed for a product reason. A directory has one row per product. A tool has one page per network size. A job board has one page per role and city that someone actually searches. The template is the cheap part. The row is the page.

## A test before you generate the set

1. Open two generated URLs side by side. If the only difference is a noun, stop.
2. Search the noun. If nobody searches it, you do not have a query, you have a permutation.
3. Delete every sentence that is identical on every page. What is left has to still make sense.
4. Give each URL a stable slug you will not change when the keyword list changes.
5. Publish an editorial hub that explains the set and links to the best entries. Hubs are where answer-style writing still matters.

FoundrList product pages are this shape: a name, a description, and a URL that belong to that product. A blog post titled best directories for {city} with the same five paragraphs is the shape to avoid. The [startup directory list](https://www.foundrlist.com/blog/complete-startup-directory-list-2026) is one hub, not a hundred spun pages.

## How this connects to AEO and GEO

A generated page can still be quoted if the row contains a specific fact. A generated page that only restates the template will not. Put the unique fact in the first paragraph of the template, pulled from the row: the price, the limit, the category, the date. Then the hub article, written by a person, answers the broad query and links into the set. That is the split between [programmatic pages](https://www.foundrlist.com/blog/programmatic-seo-for-startups) and [answer engine optimization](https://www.foundrlist.com/blog/what-is-answer-engine-optimization).

> Google's spam policies describe doorway pages and scaled content abuse. A template is allowed. A template whose purpose is to rank for queries the page does not help with is not.

## Questions people ask

### Is programmatic SEO allowed?

Yes, when each page is useful on its own. Google's spam policies target scaled pages made mainly to manipulate rankings, not templates in general.

### How many pages do I need?

As many as you have distinct records for. Ten strong pages beat a thousand blanks. Add pages when the dataset grows, not when a tool offers a keyword export.

### Should blog posts be programmatic?

Only if each post has its own research. Comparisons and data pages can be templated. Advice posts usually need a writer.

### How many programmatic pages should a startup launch with?

As many as you have distinct records for, and no more. Ten pages with different facts are safer than a thousand blanks. Add URLs when the dataset grows.

### Can I programmatic-SEO my blog?

Only for pages that are really data, such as a comparison with its own numbers. Advice posts need a writer. Spinning city or tool names through one essay is how sites get filtered.
